Cenote
Some projects cannot be captured in a single image. But they demonstrate the necessity of design for human wellbeing so clearly that they deserve to be shared.
Cenote is a project you hope never to encounter in person.
The intake rooms of the Jeroen Bosch Ziekenhuis in Den Bosch are windowless spaces. Silent witnesses to difficult news, long treatment plans, and everything you never hope to face in a hospital. We were asked to offer a moment of escape within those four walls.
Inspired by the star shafts in the pyramid of Cheops, we designed a periscope hidden within the suspended ceiling. Through daylight simulation and an artificial sense of depth, it creates the illusion of looking upward from the bottom of a cenote, a freshwater pool open to the sky, deep in a forest.
A view where there was none. Sometimes that is everything.
