for Zuiderzeemuseum Enkhuizen

It started with objects without a story. Or rather, objects whose stories had simply been forgotten. The Combers Cabinet brought together things that once held deep personal value for someone, displayed without context or explanation. Alongside it, a wallpaper of empty lamp outlines invited visitors to draw their own most treasured object. No questions asked. The response was overwhelming.

The Zuiderzee Museum saw something in that exchange and asked us to take it further. The result is the Zuiderzee Lamp, a lamp designed to hold an object of your own choosing, making it both light source and vessel for something that matters to you. To mark the launch, the first five lamps were gifted to designers who had worked with the museum. What they chose to place inside says everything.

Maarten Baas placed his children's spoon from 1978. Kiki van Eijk chose two leaves found during a walk in 2010. Richard Hutten went with Pikachu from 1998. Studio Job filled theirs with the ashes of their late cat Woensel, who lived from 1996 to 2010. RenS placed a piece of inspiration wood from 2012.

What would you put in yours?
